Youth's SOS to Rahul Gandhi for the People of Barak Valley, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram on National Highway No. 44 (Sonapur Region)

To
Rahul Gandhi
Gen. Secretary
INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS
Youth’s SOS to Rahul Gandhi on National Highway No. 44. It concerns People of Barak valley, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram
APPEAL FOR VISITING National Highway no. 44 (Shillong - Tripura Highway)
Respected Sir,

After the succession of lives lost in road accident on National Highway No. - 44 near Sonapur region from long time, On 06th January, 2010 evening, at Tongseng Village (near Sonapur) of Jayantia Hills in Meghalaya, a road accident took away the life of my father Late Shri Subhash Koiri along with my elder brother Late Gaurav Koiri and driver Late Ajim Uddin. My father was Block Development Officer at Binnakandi Dev. Block under Govt. of Assam and he needs to travel the terrain regularly as part of his job. On 6th Jan also he was returning from Guwahati to Silchar after completing his government duty. The vehicle plunged into the gorge, approx. 400 ft deep. There were no essential Road Safety equipments signs/signage available where the accident took place.

This scary news of National Highway 44, which connects Shillong with Tripura, is quite common for the residents of Barak Valley and 4 different States to connect with Guwahati. The 723 km stretch of NH-44 from Shillong to Tripura spans across the states of Meghalaya, Assam and links major district headquarters, towns and cities of Mizoram and Manipur. The available railway connectivity is not proper and broad-gauge railway project is in progress with snail speed. Therefore, NH-44 becomes the life line of all these states as the main and major mode of transportation. However, because of lack of BASIC ROAD SAFETY NORMS, the travel at NH-44 makes it dangerous, unsafe, life-threatening and tiring for the commuters. The major accident prone areas say, Tongseng, Sonapur and Malidor, are without basic road safety signs e.g : ROAD SIGNS, LINE MARKING, BARRICADES / BARRIERS, EMERGENCY FACILITY HELPLINE NO. etc.

Absence of basic Road Safety Equipments (For long years) at Sonapur region of NH-44 forced me to appeal to HER EXCELLENCY, PRATIBHA PATIL, THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Govt. of India, Shri Kamal Nath, hon’ble Union Minister Road Transport and Highways, Shri Rahul Gandhi, Gen Secretary, Indian National Congress (Special attention for visiting major accidental areas in and around Sonapur region on NH-44 for implementation of Road Safety measures), concerned Chief Minister Govt. of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Chairmen NHAI, DG Border Roads, Shri Kabindra Purkaistha, MP, Silchar for kind attention towards implementation of ROAD SAFETY Measures in and around Sonapur region. As travel near Sonapur region on NH-44 is unsafe, dangerous and life threatening for the commuters of Barak Valley (Assam), Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.
A strong desire that the same doesn't happen to any other family due to such a horrible road accidents further on National Highway No. 44 near Sonapur, I have appealed to you to visit major accidental areas country for their interference on the issue of Road Safety.
With utmost trust and faith in you and your vision, I have appealed to you to bring CHANGE for the population of Barak Valley, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.
The ideology is to Highlight the issue Road Safety (Which is neglected; not given attention for long years) and to seek Support to carry forward the same as it should be given proper attention and make this initiative successful to stop further carnage on NH-44 (Sonapur Region).
RESPECTED SIR, IT CONCERNS PEOPLE OF BARAK VALLEY (ASSAM), TRIPURA, MANIPUR and MIZORAM
Thank you for your time and attention

  2. Dear Mr. Saurabh,
My name is Dhrubajyoti Das (Rupak) and my home is in Link Road, Lane No.11 but presently working in Ethiopia (Africa).
Its really sad to hear about the tragedy that your family has met and I pray to God that the departed souls be in peace and also to give strength to you.
The noble work which you had taken by appealing the higher authorities for giving there attention to the horrible condition of NH-44 is appreciable.
Basically I am also a civil engineer by profession and I also ply this section of road regularly when i am in Indian and every time when I travel though this part I worry that whether I could reach my destination safely.
As to me the most immediate civil works that need to be done in this section for the safety of the commuters by the NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) are as follows:-
    1) Proving crash barriers at all valley location.
    2) Providing safety signs and road marking at all locations.
    3) Providing Retro reflective marking and edge line marking.
    4) Improvement of sight back distance at all curves.
    5) Improvement in the geometric design of the existing road.
Please let me know if i came help you in some way.
    with regards
